Benefits of Karate Sports
Karate is an age-old hand-to-hand combat system that originated in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. The martial art was developed mixing local methods with Chinese martial arts. According to Wikipedia, the martial art spread rapidly through the West and the rest of the world and became mainstream through popular culture. That is, through fictional books in the 1950s and martial art films such as the The Street Fighter in the 1970s. Today, karate clubs, dojos or schools, and associations are found everywhere. Local clubs and even school clubs offer different karate styles to students and locals.

Though at first much of its popularity owed much to many exaggerations in film and books, karate is a complete system of exercise that gives so many benefits to the practitioner. Karate involves moving the whole body through a series and combination of hand and foot movements. The beginner is first taught basic techniques of punching, kicking, blocking, open hand movements, and more called kihon. Mastery of kihon allows the beginner to move on to the next step, which is learning a kata, a series or sequence of movements of attack and defence. There are a series of kata that a student must learn. Practising of different kata improves leg strength, posture, and allows the student to become graceful. Sparring, practised as a sport and for self-defence, is called kumite.
A karate practitioner or karateka would swear to the great benefits that practising karate has given to him. Of course, there is the physical health benefits. Karate promotes the building of muscles, improves blood circulation and flexibility while regular training lowers cholesterol levels and increases ones energy. It also does much to improve mental health. A karateka is encouraged to meditate and release mental stress. Focus and concentration also increases as one studies and practises different kihon and kata movements. And as one improves and proves ones skill in sparring, competitions, and as one rises in rank, self-confidence and self-esteem is built.
